The procedure involves separating an image in two parts by a vertical line passing through a certain point, and determining luminosity of pixels of the line based on the height position of pixels on the line. A point of inflexion (1) of a curve representing the luminosity is calculated based on the position. Visibility distance (D) for a vehicle driver is determined based on the position of point of inflection on the image. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) a device implementing visibility distance determining method; and (b) a command/control system of a headlight or a vehicle fog light with a device implementing visibility distance determining method, with the device controlling intensity or on/off switching of lamps according to level of visibility.
