A core wire is movably disposed within a hollow shaft. A transition sleeve is slidably disposed about a distal portion of the shaft and the distal end of the core wire. A tubular protection element whose distal and proximal ends are respectively coupled to the transition sleeve and shaft, has a longer length in a collapsed configuration and a shorter length in the expanded configuration.
