The device has a polymer dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) component with eight zones that are addressed independently from each other and to respective electrodes (31-38). The electrodes provide a non rectilinear pattern to reduce the sensibility of polarization of the device, due to a transverse electrical field between the electrodes. A retardation plate of anisotropic phase reduces the polarization sensitivity of the device. An independent claim is also included for an application of a device of spatial modulation of a light beam.
