The method involves selecting statuses of presence of an instant messenger service by a user for the contacts listed in an address book of the user. The statuses of presence are transmitted to the respective contacts listed in the address book. The status relative to the user is modified for each of the contacts in the address book according to the statuses received by the contacts. Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) an instant messenger server to deliver the instant messenger services to the user terminals (b) a user terminal utilizing the services from the instant messenger server.
