Nuclear fuel having a high content of fissile material (FM) comprises an assembly (1) of elementary wires (6), mostly of fissile material assembled by forming a strand, plaiting or weaving. The assembly is contained in an envelope, resistant to oxidation and ductile, and the individual wires are compressed by deformation of the envelope. The wires are sufficiently fine to allow both dimensional accommodation to the effects of irradiation during 'burning' and evacuation of gaseous fission products. An independent claim is also included for the production of nuclear fuel.
