The seat (10) has a seat frame with a pair of vertical side members (30,31) and a first and second spacer brackets (23,24) attached to each of the vertical side members (30,31). The second spacer bracket (24) is positioned on an inboard side of the seat frame, with the inboard spacer bracket (24) extending towards the center console frame member (116). A side impact (100) deforms the door and pillar (102/110) into the seat. The impact is taken by bracket (23) and transferred through the seat into the console frame (116). The seat may be fitted with a transverse reinforcing bar (26) at the lower part of the back rest (Fig 2).
