A vehicle seat frame assembly that includes inboard and outboard generally vertical side members (30,31) that define outer surfaces has a separate first reinforcing spacer bracket (23) attached to the outboard side member (30), the bracket having a first contact surface (61) spaced apart from the outer surface of the outboard side member (30). A separate second reinforcing spacer bracket (24) is attached to the inboard side member (31) and has a first contact surface spaced apart from the outer surface of the inboard side member (31). A vehicle seat assembly that includes a center console frame member (116) and a vehicle seat (10) is also disclosed. The seat (10) has a seat frame with a pair of vertical side members (30,31) and a first and second spacer brackets (23,24) attached to each of the vertical side members (30,31). The second spacer bracket (24) is positioned on an inboard side of the seat frame, with the inboard spacer bracket (24) extending towards the center console frame member (116). A side impact (100) deforms the door and pillar (102/110) into the seat. The impact is taken by bracket (23) and transferred through the seat into the console frame (116). The seat may be fitted with a transverse reinforcing bar (26) at the lower part of the back rest (Fig 2).
