PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To retrieve an example having prescribed relation with an input sentence with a word string editing distance as a reference at high speed. PSOLUTION: This example retrieval device used for an example machine translation device includes: a minimum distance calculation part 120 calculating a possible minimum word string editing distance between the input sentence and a word string of a first language included in each group so as to retrieve an example closest to the input sentence of the first language from a corpus divided into the plurality of groups on the basis of the number of function words and the number of content words included in the word string of the first language included in each the example; a group selection part 122 selecting a group wherein a lower limit value of the distance is a threshold or below; and search parts 124-140 searching for a solution wherein the distance to the input sentence defined by the word string editing distance is minimum among the examples included in the selected group.
