PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phenol resin-based ultrafine fiber having excellent heat resistance, flame retardancy, chemical resistance or the like, and further having extremely ultrafine fiber diameter compared to that of the conventional one; to provide a phenol resin-based ultrafine carbon fiber and a phenol resin-based ultrafine active carbon fiber obtained by carbonizing the fiber or further activating the fiber after the carbonization; and to provide a method for producing them.;SOLUTION: The conjugate fiber comprising an incompatible or hardly compatible resin consisting essentially of a thermoplastic resin as the second component of the sea component, and a phenol resin as the island component is obtained by forming a compounded material obtained by mixing the phenol resin with the second component into a fiber. The phenol resin-based ultrafine fiber is obtained by selectively dissolving and removing only the second component in the conjugate fiber. The phenol resin-based ultrafine carbon fiber is obtained by carbonizing the conjugate fiber. The phenol resin-based ultrafine activated carbon fiber is obtained by activating the conjugate fiber, the phenol resin-based ultrafine fiber or the phenol resin-based ultrafine carbon fiber.
