PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high sensitivity accurate method and system for identifying and quantitatively determining platelets in a whole blood sample to measure the activated state of platelets by using an automatic blood apparatus. ;SOLUTION: One cell is once passed through a focusing light source in order to form a forward light scattering pattern showing the intensity of scattering light per a unit scattering angle as a function of a scattering angle to analyze whole blood sample. However, the intensity of scattering light is measured on the basis of first and second optical channel signal values increased so as to bring about two scattering intensity measured values sufficient to discriminate platelets in the sample from non- platelets over two conical angle intervals in two optical channels and the first optical channel signal value is obtained from the gain increase of a high angle detector and the second optical channel signal value is obtained from the gain increase of a low angle detector (a). Platelets in the sample are discriminated from non-platelets and a platelet parameter is measured by the presence of a platelet signal obtained from light scattering in a vol.-to-refractive index map.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
