PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a DNA, having a base sequence of an antigenic polypeptide gene of 53kDa of Chlamydia pneumoniae or a base sequence complementary thereto and useful for diagnosis, etc., of the infection with the Chlamydia pneumoniae. SOLUTION: This DNA is obtained from a genomic DNA of Chlamydia pneumoniae, capable of decoding and analyzing the base sequence and has a base sequence of the formula which is a gene of an antigenic polypeptide of 53 kDa of the Chlamydia pneumoniae or a DNA having a base sequence complementary thereto. The DNAs are specific for the Chlamydia pneumoniae and may be a DNA having =90% homology with the base sequence of the DNAs. Any of the DNAs can readily be synthesized with a commercially available DNA syntheslzer.
