PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To segment an image alone of an information code with high probability even when a noise image such as a character is included in the image of the information code.;SOLUTION: Data with which a visual field area including the entire read image is divided into two decision areas being a central part and its peripheral part is set to a coordinate window register 38, a smear circuit 22 converts the read image into a smear image composed of plural blocks, and a labeling circuit 23 attaches a label number to each block. Even though the area decision, XY ratio decision and side length decision of each block are performed, a coordinate discrimination circuit 37 switches and controls condition switching circuits 34 to 36 according to whether the block exists in the decision area of the central part or in the decision area of the peripheral part and changes decision conditions in each decision area. Thus, only the coordinate data of the block where information code to be read exists is made effective, and the image is segmented on the basis of the coordinate data and decoding processing is performed.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
