Disclosed is a method and apparatus for creating an environment within a combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine suitable for self-ionizing and combustion of a fuel that would otherwise not self-ignite. Under high load conditions, a pilot amount of fuel is injected into the combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine during the piston compression stroke. The amount and timing of the fuel is chosen to heat an intake charge within the combustion chamber to a temperature equal to or greater than the fuel self-ignition temperature at the time required for a main fuel injection to drive the piston during energy course. In general, autoignition temperatures should be reached at or near the upper dead center of the piston. Also, an injector design to deliver fuel in the manner prescribed by the method is disclosed.
