A new procedure to detect early colorectal cancer, consisting in the determination, in human serum or plasma, of the total sialic acid content (TSA) and of the total sialic acid content normalized by the amount of total proteins (TSA / TP). The values obtained in the serum or plasma of a given individual are compared with the corresponding pre-established cut-off points that determine the probability of developing colorectal cancer. This procedure allows for a fast, reliable and economical technique to detect colon and rectal cancer when it is in an early and asymptomatic phase.
