A radio access network (200) including a multiplicity of cells (1: 1-3: 5), multiple RNCs (205; 210; 215) in control of a respective group of cells (1: 1-1: 5 ; 2: 1-2: 5; 3: 1-3: 5); where a first RNC of the RNCs acts as an SRNC (205) for a mobile station (230; 240; 235) and is in charge of a connection to the mobile station (230; 240; 235); a second RNC of the RNCs acts as a first DRNC (210; 210; 215) and supports the SRNC (205) by providing a radio connection to the mobile station (230; 240; 235) when a serving cell (1: 5; 2: 4; 2: 5) is not under the control of the SRNC (205); characterized in that the RNCs (205; 210; 215) have permanently stored information (205A; 210A; 215A) about the cells (1: 1-1: 5; 2: 1-2: 5; 3: 1-3: 5 ) of their respective own control, about cells (2: 1; 1: 5.3: 1; 2: 5) that are contiguous with their own cells (1: 1-1: 5; 2: 1-2: 5; 3 : 1-3: 5) and about signaling network addresses of the RNCs (210; 205, 215; 210) that control cells that are contiguous with their own cells (1: 1-1: 5; 2: 1-2 : 5; 3: 1-3: 5) although they have no permanent information about all other cells (2: 2-2: 5, 3: 1-3: 5; 1: 1-1: 4, 3: 2 -3: 5; 1: 1-1: 5, 2: 1-2: 4) in the radio access network (200); a signaling network (220) that connects the RNCs (205; 210; 215) to provide cell information to be transmitted from the first DRNC (210; 210; 215) to the SRNC (205), and for the SRNC (205) request assignment of radio resources in the first DRNC (210; 210; 215) for transfers from the serving cell (1: 5; 2: 4; 2: 5) to a desired cell (2: 1; 2: 5; 3 :1).
