The actual radiation dose absorbed in the body iscalculated using three-dimensional Monte Carlo transport(19). Neutrons, protons, deuterons, tritons, helium-3, alphaparticles, photons, electrons, and positrons are transportedin a completely coupled manner, using this Monte Carlo All-Particle Method (MCAPM) (18). The major elements of theinvention include: computer hardware , user description ofthe patient, description of the radiation source, physicaldatabases, Monte Carlo transport, and output of dosedistributions (15). This facilitated the estimation of dosedistributions on a Cartesian grid for neutrons, photons,electrons, positrons, and heavy charged-particles incident onany biological target, with resolutions ranging from micronsto centimeters. Calculations can be extended to estimatedose distributions on general-geometry (non-Cartesian) gridsfor biological and/or non-biological media.
