A ureteric stent is provided by the invention, having a length which is less than half that of the ureter. Conventional ureteric stems extend all the way from the kidney to the bladder and are left in place for long periods of time, or even permanently. Encrustations may build up on the stents and conventional stents also cause side effects. The reduced length stent of the invention causes fewer side effects. In a preferred embodiment, the stent has a length substantially equal to one third of the length of the ureter, and has means (10, 11) to retain the stent in a predetemined position within the ureter. For example at least one end of the stent may be provided with a spiral coil (10 or 11).
