PURPOSE: A method for reporting absence by a short message in a mobile communication terminal is provided to enable a message sender to recognize the absence of the other party after transmitting a short message to the other party, thereby preventing the message sender from waiting for a response meaninglessly. CONSTITUTION: An SMS absence notification mode is set up by an SMS(Short Message Service) absence notification set module(S201). A call control server receives SMS absence notification contents. MIN(Mobile Identification Number) information of a terminal connected to the call control server is received from a home location register for storing terminal number information, SMS absence notification flag information, and SMS absence notification contents information on a database(S203-S205). If a calling terminal requests to transmit a short message, the terminal number information corresponding to a called terminal is extracted(S207-S209). Character information corresponding to the SMS absence notification contents information and the calling terminal number information are provided to a short message service center(S211-S213). The character information is transmitted to the calling terminal(S215).
