PURPOSE: An apparatus and method for managing home appliances in a home network is provided to enable a user to directly easily access home appliances of a home network with home appliance IDs only intimate with the user by using an arbitrary external device. CONSTITUTION: An invite message receiving part(231) receives an invite message transmitted from an external device via a wide area network(22). A home appliance management information reading part(232) extracts a home appliance URI from the invite message received to the invite message receiving part(231). In case that the extracted URI is a gateway URI, the home appliance management information reading part(232) reads all the home appliance management information. A gateway response message transmitting part(233) creates a response message for the invite message, adds all the read home appliance management information to the created response message, and transmits a gateway response message. Meanwhile, if the extracted URI is a home appliance URI, the home appliance management information reading part(232) reads home appliance management information on the home appliance having the extracted URI. A home appliance management function execution part(234) extracts a home network address, which can be recognized in the home network, among the home appliance management information read from the home appliance management information reading part(232) and executes a management function for the home appliance having the extracted home network address.
