PURPOSE: A method for improving image quality is provided to accurately identify texts, or pictures, thereby implementing an accurate image by dividing an image, that is, a mixture of the texts and the pictures into a picture area including the pictures and a non-picture area including the texts, and processing the divided areas differently. CONSTITUTION: R, G, and B color data of a subject pixel are converted into color data having brightness and chroma components(10). History information of the subject pixel is stored, wherein the history information comprises the number of continued background pixels or continued picture pixels before the subject pixel(16). Features of the subject pixel are detected according to the history information(18). The subject pixel is designated so as to be included in one of a text area, a background area, and a picture area according to the state of a left pixel adjacent the subject pixel and the detected features of the subject pixel(20). The subject pixel is processed according to the area to which the subject pixel belongs(22).
