PURPOSE: A method for displaying the gray scale on the high efficient plasma display panel and an apparatus for driving a plasma display panel employing the same are provided to improve the low gray scale representation by reducing the luminance of the least significant bit(LSB) sub-fields. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for driving a plasma display panel employing a method for displaying the gray scale on the high efficient plasma display panel includes an image signal process unit(100), a gamma correction unit(200), an automatic power control(APC) unit(600), a sustain and scan pulse driving unit(700), an error diffusion unit(300) and a memory controller(400). The image signal process unit generates the digital image data. The gamma correction unit corrects and outputs the gamma value with matching the received digital image data to the characteristics of the high efficient plasma display panel. The APC unit calculates the APC level in response to the detected load factor. The sustain and scan pulse driving unit generates the sub-field arrangement in response to the APC level and the number of sustain pulses and applies the control signal generated based on the sub-field arrangement to the high efficient plasma display panel. The error diffusion unit diffuses the display error for the adjacent pixels. And, the memory controller generates the sub-field data corresponding to the sub-field arrangement generated at the sustain and scan pulse driving unit and applies the generated sub-field data to the high efficient plasma display panel.
