BISTABLE CHIRAL SPLAY NEMATIC LCD STABLE BOTH IN THE SPLAY AND 180-TWIST STATES

PURPOSE: A bistable chiral splay nematic LCD is provided to carry out vertical switching and horizontal switching by inducing vertical electric fields between first and second electrodes and horizontal electric fields between the second and third electrodes, when voltage differences are generated among the electrodes by different driving voltages. CONSTITUTION: A bistable chiral splay nematic LCD includes upper and lower substrates(50,52), and first and second transparent electrodes(54,58) respectively formed of transparent conductive metal such as ITO on the upper and lower substrates, wherein first and second orientation films(56,64) are respectively formed on the upper and lower substrates. A protecting film(60) is formed of silicon compound or an insulating material such as BCB on the lower substrate. At least one or more third transparent electrodes(62) are formed of the transparent conductive metal on the lower substrate having the protecting film. Bistable chiral splay nematic LC(66) is initially oriented by the first and second orientation film and in the splay state or 180 twist state according to driving voltages applied to the first to third transparent electrodes.
