PURPOSE: A polarizer with phase retarder, a method for manufacturing the polarizer with phase retarder and an LCD(Liquid Crystal Display) are provided to manufacture the polarizer with phase retarder to have a uniformity in large area and a biaxial orientation with a wide set range of optical characteristic, thereby making it possible to improve viewing angles of the LCD and making the LCD thin when the polarizer with phase retarder is applied to the LCD. CONSTITUTION: A phase retarder(2) is laminated on the surface of a polarizer(1). The phase retarder includes a transparent resin film(3) having orientation in the film plane and at least one coat layer(4) with birefringent anisotropy. In the phase retarder, the in-plane retardation value(R0) is not less than 20 nm, and the retardation value along the thickness direction(R') is more than 40 nm. The coat layer is formed on a hetero-film(6), and then is transcribed on the surface of the polarizer or the surface of the transparent resin film. The transparent resin film is capable of being selected from the group consisting of polycarbonate resin, cyclic polyolefin resin, and cellulose resin.
