A pupil detection method for iris recognition using pattern recognition and an image process, a method for extracting a shape descriptor, and a device, a system, and the method for extracting iris features using the same are provided to reduce an operation quantity and enhance speed for detecting an iris by detecting a pupil in real-time with high accuracy and insensibility to influence of illumination lighting the pupil. An image obtainer(21) obtains an image fit to the iris recognition after digitalizing/quantizing an input image. A reference point detector(22) detects a real center of the pupil after detecting a reference point in the pupil from the obtained image. An inner/outer border detector(23,24) separates an iris area. An image coordinate converter(25) defines an origin of a coordinate system as the center of a circular pupil border. An image analysis zone definer(26) classifies an analysis zone in the iris image in order to use an iris pattern as a minutia. An image smoother(27) smoothes the image through scale space filtering. An image regulator(28) regulates moment to an average size. A shape descriptor extractor(29) extracts the shape descriptor by generating/using a Zernike moment centered on the minutia.
