The digital reproduction device comprises a first error-correction decoder for performing error correction on playback data, reproduced from a helical scan magnetic tape, using a first error correction code. A burst error detector detects a burst error that has occurred in a playback signal during reproduction. A second and a third error correction device perform error correction using a second and a third error correction code, respectively. An error-correction decoding algorithm followed by at least one of the second and third error correction devices is changed, based on if a burst error was detected or not.
