The device has a compressor and a turbine in a turbine housing and an impeller wheel with a radial flow entry and a variable turbine geometry for variable adjustment of at least one flow cross-section. The turbine housing is made in two parts and has first and second channels (10,11), whereby the first channel contains a control grid (18) with individually adjustable guide vanes (19) and the second has no vanes. An independent claim is also included for the following: (a) a method of operating an inventive exhaust gas turbocharger.
