A sludge drying reactor has a stack of square panel sludge trays. Each panel has two opposite edges bearing an air guide plate, and two further opposite edges with air ducts. En-route from the air inlet to the air outlet, air impinges on the guide plates in a direction opposite to that taken by the incoming sludge. A sludge drying reactor has an inlet for wet sludge and an outlet for dried sludge, a dry air inlet and a moist air outlet, plus a stacked array of square panels each separated by a gap from the adjacent panel. Each panel bears a quantity of sludge that is repeatedly disturbed by an overhead rotor with scraper blades. Two opposite sides of each square panel have an air guide plate. The other two sides of each panel each have air ducts that are so directed that, en route from the air inlet to the air outlet, the air impinges on the guide plates in a direction opposite to that taken by the incoming sludge. The direction taken by the air alternates at each successive panel.
