Method for calculating and monitoring the instantaneous amount of ink in an ink reservoir (2), whereby the ink (2a) is containing in a fine capillary foam within the reservoir. Amounts of ink used during printing and or cleaning of the inkjet print head are calculated in the printer control unit using corrections for measured temperature and other physical parameters variations in the print head. The resultant converted ink usage values are continuously stored in a control unit memory. An independent claim is made for an arrangement for determining and monitoring the instantaneous ink usage in an inkjet printer.
