An in-line arrangement for monitoring fouling simultaneously measures the progressive extinction of light transmission at two discrete, but similarly located stations (1, 2), connected to provide a differential output signal, where station (1) records undisturbed deposition, whilst station (2) is subjected to regular cleaning in place (CIP), is new.
