The method involves determining a total degree of wear of the component by integration of weighted partial wear functions. The integration of the weighted partial wear functions is determined by using an equation of the form dV = (a1*dV1 + a2*dV2 + a3*dV3+...+ an*dVn), where dV is the total wear increment, an is a weighting factor, dVn is a partial wear function and dt is the time unit. An independent claim is also included for a device for implementing the inventive method.
