Method for avoiding a coin blockage in a coin output channel of a coin operated machine with a control unit. According to the method the coin output channel (11) is provided at its mouth with a sensor unit that is connected to the control unit. The control unit in conjunction with the sensor unit controls the paying out process. Thus if a blockage is detected by the sensor the control unit deactivates an actuator used to pay coins out. An independent claim is made for a device for avoiding a coin blockage in a paying out channel of a coin operated machine. The device has a light barrier sensor with a light transmitter and a light receiver connected to a control unit.
