A method for performing endothermic or exothermic gas-phase reactions on a solid bed of porous catalyst pellets involves supplying or removing the reaction heat by direct heat transfer using a chemically inert ionic liquid medium with a half-life of more than 1 year which is in the liquid state under reaction conditions and is passed through the catalyst bed from top to bottom.
