Left side(2) and right side(1) wind-up machines oppose each other mirror-image fashion. Each machine has a spool rotater(3.1,3.2), each provided with two spindles(4.1,4.4;5.1;5.2) for winding up a filament group(19,20) on a spool(9). Each machine has a group of filament guides(17,18) for separate guidance of filament groups. The filament guides are mounted on one side of a guide strip(16) extending parallel to the long sides of each winding machine. The two groups of guides are held in closely adjacent filament movement planes. The guide groups(17,18) can move on the guide strips(16) between a resting and an operational position. Connection of both guide groups allows their movements to be governed by a drive unit and control equipment incorporated in a control unit(14.1,14.2) for controling one machine(1) or the other(2). During a winding operation one group of guides is offset from the other group along the machine length. Spacing between operational positions for guides of both groups is identical. Guide strips(16) are mounted on a machine frame part(6.1,6.2) each of which supports the right side or left side machine. Spool rotaters(3.1, 3.2) for both machines have a spacing less than twice the diameter of a completely wound spool. The drive units and control units(14.1,14.2) of both machines may be coupled and guided together so that the two machines be synchronized to operate as one.
