The refuse container (1) has a sliding lid (2), loaded in open direction by its own weight, and by a spring unit (11) in closed direction. The lid has a defined rest position, in which a lid closing edge (9) forms a gap (21) of approx. 200mm with an associated opening edge (17) of the container. In this position, the force of the lid weight (10) corresponds to the spring force. The lid is pivoted about an axis (5) on the container. The force of the spring unit is blocked when the lid is in rest position.
