The hospital bed is assembled of a frame (2), a headboard (34) and a foot board (35), and a mattress (1). The two segments of the frame (2) can be individually lifted. In particular cases the complete frame (2) can be lowered using a foot operated hydraulic pump and an auxiliary frame (8) with a mattress (10) on top pulled out laterally in order to prevent a patient from falling onto the rigid floor when moving intensively.
