The search procedure for finding the nearest point of a characteristic (S) of a given analog signal in an ensemble of points (C(i), i=0, ... ,k-1), which are non uniformly distributed, comprises successive searches in intervals Ij in the ensemble. The intervals are obtained by a division-in-two of the preceding intervals with the number of points in two subintervals equal within a unit. The subinterval containing the received point is the interval of the subsequent search. Independent claims are included for a receiver, a modem and a transmission system.
