A hair dye composition (C) comprises an oxidation colorant precursor, an alcohol oxidase enzyme, a substrate bearing an alcohol for the enzyme, and a direct cationic azoic, methinic or azomethinic colorant. The substrate may be (partially) substituted by the oxidation colorant precursor, in which case it carries an aliphatic or aromatic alcohol group. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a method of dyeing hair comprising applying (C) for a time sufficient of develop the desired coloration; and (2) a dye kit comprising a first compartment containing (C) (except the oxidase), and a second compartment comprising a composition containing the oxidase.
