Catanionic membrane in the form of an organized solid bilayer comprising a lateral alternation of cocrystallized anionic surfactants with hydrogen counterions and cationic surfactants with hydroxyl counterions is stabilized by adsorption of a polymer that is partially hydrophobic or has an overall negative charge. The anionic/cationic surfactant molar ratio is greater than 1. An independent claim is also included for for producing a catanionic membrane as above by mixing the molten anionic and cationic surfactants in a low-conductivity aqueous solvent to form unilamellar vesicles, cooling the mixture to form flat aggregates comprising a single crystallized molecular bilayer, and stabilizing the bilayers by adding a solution of the polymer in a low-conductivity aqueous solvent. For x moles of cationic surfactant, there are x moles of anionic surfactant with a hydrogen counterion and less than 2x moles of anionic surfactant with a hydrogen or metal counterion.
