The spline is constituted of single flexible part with two lateral arms (101, 102) and a leg (100) that allows to maintain a gap between strips (L1, L2) and constitutes an expansion joint. The arms constitute projections engaged in grooves (R1, R2) formed on edges of the strips. The edges and a substrate define a recess (E) permitting deformation of the joint when the spline is subjected to compression caused by expansion of the strips. An independent claim is also included for a utilization of a spline for assembling two panels or strips to form a covering of a substrate.
