PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a tracking device and method for maintaining the size of a gate to the extent so that it can be maintained to be tracked and for improving the maintenance of tracking under an unneeded signal environment. ;SOLUTION: A parameter (d) for determining a gate size can be determined to be an optimum parameter d0 so that the difference between the number of unneeded signals in a gate and the number of target signals can be maximized by a gate size calculation means 3 according to the AN system, thus setting the gate to an appropriate size in an unneeded signal environment or in a free space without any unneeded signals. Also, a weighted integrated smoothing vector is calculated using correlation distance that is calculated from a prediction observation vector that is the center of the gate and an observation vector in the gate by a smoothing means 5 according to the AN system, thus suppressing the scattering of the smoothing vector and maintaining the tracking easily.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2000,JPO
