PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve a shock absorber of such type that it is provided with rows of diaphragms, a plurality of energy absorbing elements arranged between diaphragms, and the rows of fender panels extended on the sides of the diaphragms. ;SOLUTION: A single rigid central guide rail 12 is provided, which guides a highway collision shock absorber 10 when the shock absorber 10 is collapsed in the axial direction. A diaphragm assembly 14 is provided with recessed saddle parts and a central guide body which is slid along the rail while being locked to the rail at the time of side collision respectively. The diaphragm assembly 14 supports fender panels 16, and each fender panel 16 is provided with four bulged parts that have extended lengthwise, a central slot, and a rear peripheral part tapered for reducing the catching of a vehicle. An engery absorbing element 22 is arranged between the diaphragm assemblies 14, and an indicator is provided, by which when the energy absorbing element 22 is compressed and there is possibility of damage thereof, it is clearly indicated.;COPYRIGHT: (C)1997,JPO
