Operation of a communication network (1) by the transmission of packets is observed by means of packets to or transmitted by a control unit (2b) of a router (2) belonging to the communication network (1). For this purpose, a module of collection can be connected to a link 3 of the communication network (1) so as to collect the packets corresponding to the second packets transferred at the level of an interface between a conveying unit (2a) and a control unit (2b) of a router (2). The packets collected are selected, and then the contents and the coordinates of the packets selected are sent to a recording unit. In a preferred embodiment, the collection module (30) is integrated into the router (2) and the recording unit (31) is connected to the communication network (1) at a distance of the router (2) containing the collection module (30).
