Human factors authentication using abstract definitions of viewable or audible objects

A method of authenticating a user of a fixed or mobile terminal, whereby the user is offered a set of abstract viewable or audible objects, at least one of which falls within the user's abstract definition profile. When the user selects the correct object, a further public code is presented, and the user must enter a specific portion of this, combined with a secret code, to authorise the transaction or access required. The abstract objects and the public code may be transmitted via different communication means.
