Treatment of wood chips from soft and/or hard wood involves introducing cracks in the chips or refining the chips to a coarse fiber structure to shorten diffusion ways within the wood material, treating the chips with an acidic leaching liquid, extensively removing the leaching liquid and adjusting the pH to a refining level preferably greater than or equal to 4. Resin depleting chemicals are added before or during pH adjustment or during introduction of cracks. An independent claim is included for a system using the method for treating the wood chips.
