Removing nitrate in water at concentrations up to units of parts per million comprises chemical reduction of nitrate and converting to nitrogen gas, by reducing nitrate to nitrite using zinc powder, converting nitrite to nitrogen gas using sulfamic acid, and reoxidation of residual nitrite to nitrate by a peroxide.
