A process detects the advance of corrosion in an assembly, e.g. a pipeline system, that has cathode protection with first (1) and second (3) electrodes linked by an electrolyte (4). An electrical measuring instrument (6) is linked to the first electrode (1). A voltage source (5) is located between the first and second electrodes and drives an electrochemical reaction at the first electrode. A reference electrode (2) is linked to the first electrode (1) via the electrolyte (4). The first electrode is a cathode pipe, e.g. gas pipe.
