A method of identifying the function formula of nonlinear data which comprises the first step of determining a function type selected from among a plural number of functions by using a genetic algorithm with binary coding and first chromosomal structures showing binding, and also determining second chromosomal structures showing a time lag and a coefficient in the function in each of the first chromosomal structures by using a real-valued genetic algorithm, and the second step of forming individuals by using the first chromosomal structures and the second chromosomal structures determined in the first step and calculating the fitness for the target nonlinear data. In this method, the above-described steps are repeated until the fitness calculated in the second step falls within a predetermined range. When the fitness falls within the predetermined range, the function formula of the nonlinear data is determined based on the first chromosomal structure and the second chromosomal structure at that point.
