An optical microresonator and method of forming same includes a microcylinder (200) and a circumferential coating (202) formed on the microcylinder. This coating has a higher index of refraction than the microcylinder and is of such thickness relative to the diameter of the microcylinder that a resonant waveguide is formed such that light optically couples from an optical source waveguide (204) onto the microcylinder.
