The internal combustion engine has a crankcase especially of light metal alloy, and a crankshaft supported by a bearing cap (3) in a bearing block (2) in the crankcase. A multi-section plain bearing shell is installed around the crankshaft journal (4). A sealing ring (1) which at least partially encompasses the crankshaft journal with radial sealing is installed in the bearing block, in the bearing cap, and/or in the crankshaft journal in direct proximity to the bearing shells. The sealing ring has a coefficient of thermal expansion which at most is the same value as that of the crankshaft.
