The method involves measuring an ambient temperature and the temperature value is transmitted to a control unit (1). Duty cycle of a pulse width modulation for a light emitting diode (2) is increased or decreased by the control unit when the ambient temperature increases or decreases, respectively. Light emission of the diode is adjusted within maximum and minimum values based on the duty cycle of the pulse width modulation. An independent claim is also included for an illumination unit of a motor vehicle.
