A method for neutralizing and sanitizing bodies of water damaged by mining involves incorporating a powder, containing mechanically activated volcanic rock particles (I) as active agent, in the water and surrounding gangues and spoil heaps for sufficient time to cause controllable binding, strength and permeability of the matrix, adjustment of the pH to 7.5-10.5 and reduction of the heavy metal concentration in the vicinity of (I).
